Oct 22-24
Hello Parents!
With a short week and dressing up this week went very quick!
We did not have a letter of the week this week due to the short week. We continued talking about the starting letters/sounds of words from our morning routine: calendar, weather, etc.
Our theme was Pumpkins. We had a pumpkin cut in half in our discovery center and spent our small group time on Monday using our 5 senses with our pumpkins. It is safe to say, most if not all of the students are not a fan of plain pumpkin.
On Tuesday, we cut strips of paper to make our own rolly-poly pumpkins. These are in "our pumpkin patch" above our lockers. We also watched a short video on the life cycle of the pumpkin. We then compared what we learned about apples to what we learned about pumpkins. We made a venn diagram to illustrate this. The students came up with some really great things!
On Wednesday, we made Jack-o-lanterns with shape faces and then when you open them up are the parts of the pumpkin: the pulp and the seeds. To know how many seeds to put in, the students drew a card 1-5, told me the number on the card, and then pulled out that many seeds to put in their pumpkin. The students are doing great with this!
At home, I encourage you to point out and question students on numbers, letters, and rhymes that happen in your daily life. When you connect what the students are learning at school to their home lives, it helps make learning meaningful and genuine. It is ok if they dont know the right one, just tell them the correct answer and move on with your usual activity. You don't even need to say that they got it wrong, just say the correct answer for them. We dont want to discourage learning, but reinforce the trying and lesson. Always praise them for trying and making learning fun and exciting for them. Celebrate the triumphs in their lives. When they are proud of themselves, they are excited to do it again and again.

- Conferences are coming up! An email was sent out today with a link to sign up for a 15 minute slot on either: Thursday Nov 8 (3:00-6:30), Friday Nov 9 (9:00am -12:00pm), or Thursday Nov 15 (3:00-6:30). If you are in extended day, please sign up for a conference with myself and Mrs. Zajicek. Let me know if you have any questions.
- Field Trip is coming up! November 13. The trip will be to Mosquito Hill in New London. We will be talking about "What animals do for the winter." The trip will fit into your child's normally scheduled class time. More info to come!
- Dress for the weather. Please send your child dressed for the weather as we go outside as long as it is not raining or below 0*
- RSVP. If you have not done so, please RSVP for fall fun fest. You can send me an email or you can send the form back in your child's folder. We want an accurate count so we are able to buy the proper amount of supplies. Since this is open to all Hortonville 4K, this number can vary greatly if students dont RSVP. The event is on Tuesday night 10/30 from 5pm-7pm. You can wear your costumes to this event.
- Halloween. Halloween at St. Edward is a fun time. We will have a small class party and do fun activities. We DO NOT wear our costumes to school, but please feel free to wear halloween colors as noted on your Red Ribbon Week flyer.

Hello Parents!
Today's week really flew by!
Our letter of the week was Aa. We talked about the sound Aa makes (like in apples, ants, alligator). We practiced our hand symbol, our handwriting sheet, and read our Alphatales story, The Adventures of Alice Alligator. The students are doing really well with our alphabet letters. I am so proud of their progress with the sign language symbol, the sound symbol, the letter and even our handwriting sheets are improving!
Our theme was Fall. We read many books about fall, discussed what we see in the fall, and then what we know about fall. We made a ziplock "leaf globe." It is adorable, like a snow globe, but filled with fall colors! Students worked their fine motor skills scooping the "leaves" from the buckets with a spoon, and on their colors when they told me the color before they put the spoonfulls in.

One book we read was There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed Some Leaves. There is a lot of rhyming words in this book. We are starting to work on rhyming as it is a good skill to have when reading (if you recognize the ending of a word but it has a new beginning sound, you are better able to problem solve the word). As we work on this in the classroom, you can work on it at home. Play rhyming games in the car, on a walk, at the dinner table, etc. It is fine if they make up words, the concept of having a rhyme is the important part at this point in their development.

Hello Parents!
We have a teacher inservice tomorrow (Friday) so I am getting things out a day earlier. We had a very busy week in 4k this week!
Our letter of the week was Oo. We talked about the two sounds Oo makes (like in orange and in octopus). We still practiced our hand symbol, our handwriting sheet, and read our Alphatales story even though we were very busy in our class!
Our theme was Fire Safety/Safety. On Tuesday, we had a visit from our nurse. She talked about proper hand washing--a very important lesson as the cold and flu season is upon us. Just to recap so you know how they are taught to wash their hands: 2 squirts school soap, sing abc while rubbing hands together on all sides and between fingers, the "now I know my.." part is washing all the soap bubbles off in the water, and then dry with 2 towels. I think we are either getting it or really like singing the abc's in the bathroom :)
On Wednesday, our AM class had a fire drill and the fire trucks came. They were able to see a firefighter dress in front of them to show them that it is not scary and they are there to help. We reiterated the fact that if there is a fire, give the firefighter a hug, don't run away and hide. They are there to help. The PM class watched a video on firefighters and I found one of a man dressing as well as showed them the photos from the AM class. I made sure to show a video that showed the sound the breathing mask makes as that seems to be the scariest part for some. PM had a fire drill at the end of September.
On Thursday Officer Janda came to visit. He is an Outagamie County Sheriff. We talked about when we call 911 (even if you call on accident stay on the phone and tell them it was an accident) and only call in a real emergency. We talked about what a police officer does and what he has on his uniform. The AM class got to see the car, but Officer Janda did not have it in the afternoon as he was there to pick up his children as well, but he did have his radio, which was at home charging in the AM. Children really enjoyed hearing the voices on the radio! We also talked of gun safety: If you see a gun 1) DO NOT TOUCH IT and 2) GO GET AN ADULT. Finally, we also got fun coloring books and Packer cards from Officer Janda.

Oct 1-Oct 4
This week's letter was Cc. We practiced saying, hearing it, writing it, and making and coloring pictures of words with it. We colored cameras, made handprint cats, and glued "cotton clouds" on our Cs. We enjoyed all the activities and are excited to learn more letters!
Our theme was the apples. We discussed many different aspects of apples. We labeled the parts of apples, discovered the different parts of by looking at them first hand, We got out magnifying glasses, used our 5 senses and more with apples. We also stamped with apples when we looked at their inside and found the "apple star" that had 5 points.
While doing the above mentioned activities, we worked on fine motor skills with writing, cutting, coloring, and gluing. Students are starting to pick up on sounds they hear and the letter they are associated with. They are also learning the classroom procedures, time management, respect for their friends, problem solving skills, and new found independence and responsibility.
The website has been updated with new scholastic information (as well as the post below) and I also updated the website with apple unit pictures.

Scholastic Book Order
The next Scholastic is being sent home. They are starting to come out with the holiday books. I will be sending out an order Friday October 26, 2012 as well as November 30, 2012. Feel free to place your order by either date.
Please consider ordering books for gifts this holiday season! It is wonderful to encourage children to be excited about reading and books as a gift and something wonderful. There are also many holiday books that are good teaching tools that are available in the scholastic orders.
