St. Patrick's Day

Students started off the week by meeting our silly leprechaun.  He told the students they could build traps to try to catch him in blocks, write him letters in writing asking where his gold was, or draw him maps in art where they thought he should hide the gold.  It was so nice to see the students in all the centers!

On Monday, students worked on measuring St. Patrick's day images with cubes.  The concept if measuring is very tricky as they don't always understand that they need to stay withing the two sides (or dots in this project) in order to determine "how many cubes big" something was.  Keep working on this at home! You can measure with anything! How many place mats big is your table?  How many hangers wide is the closet?  Have fun with it!

Students have begun typing their names at sign in to get them familiar with the keyboard as well as the different font for the computer. In addition to the letters in their name, they are working on shift for capital letters, enter to go down a line and will be doing space soon.  We will be adding to our typing as time goes on as well.

Our traps got knocked down at night by that silly leprechaun, but they kept trying!  He also left us a note on Tuesday that we had to discover what two colors mix to make his favorite color green!  It was a messy project but we discovered that blue and yellow make green!

On Wednesday, students made rainbows in which they had to read the color word (based on initial sound of that first letter) and then rip paper into tiny pieces to fit into the slices on the rainbow. This works on those fine motor skills and strengthening them.
We did our usual letter of the week.  We did our usual letter of the week as well.  The letter of the week was Ww .  We learned the sign language for a letter, the literacy link sound symbols, the letter sound, and looking at and writing it in both capital letters and lower case letters.  Click here to view the many ways we learn the letter of the week!

Each week we watch letter videos from "Have Fun Teaching" and the students are really picking up the names of letters, formations, and the sounds of letters.  Check out these videos with you child!  Click HERE.

The Tuesday project of letter of the week is to decorate a letter with something that starts with the letter. This week we decorated the letter Ww is for watercolors.
On Thursday, our letter of the week project was to read a page from our alphabet book, W is for Whale.

Dr. Seuss Round 2

This week we had Dr. Seuss week round 2!

We started our week of rhyming and matching the capital fish to the lower case fish. The rhyming is still tricky for some so keep practicing at home!  We have also been practicing with Dr. Seuss number and letter
cards to recognize, count to, say the sounds, or even tell the difference between letters and numbers.  Students are doing really great.

We also got to start addition!  We did addition of hats, addition of cubes in red,
blue, and pickle color too!  Students are really starting to understand the concept of addition as we begin doing some simple problems on the board.

Students also graphed colored gold fish and talked about more or less.  They are really having fun with the concepts!
We also got to make oobleck and play in it!  It was really messy fun!  It is a simple cornstarch and water combo with a little bit of green food coloring.  It is also easy to clean: let it dry and wipe it up!  Try it at home!

We did our usual letter of the week.  We did our usual letter of the week as well.  The letter of the week was Vv .  We learned the sign language for a letter, the literacy link sound symbols, the letter sound, and looking at and writing it in both capital letters and lower case letters.  Click here to view the many ways we learn the letter of the week!

Dr. Seuss

I got the newsletter out early!  Yay!
We celebrated Dr. Seuss' birthday this week!

On Monday, we made Dr. Seuss hats with rhyming words. Students wrote their own initial sound of the rhyming words that they created.  They then got to wear them around!  They also did some Green Eggs and Ham activity in which the students rolled the dice to see how many eggs to put on their plate. They then had to circle if that plate had more or less than the other plate they rolled.  Students did very well with this and are getting better at writing those numbers.

On Wednesday, we did Red Fish Blue Fish, One Fish, Two Fish. Students had to roll a color die and a number die. The color die told them what color they had to color their fish and number die was how many to put in the bowl. They did this a second time and they then had to total how many fish they had in their bowl.

We also got to work with some number and alphabet cards with Dr. Seuss. This worked on if it is was a letter or a number, as well as recognizing them and counting or saying their sound. The cool thing, this activity could be tailored to each child and his/her needs.

We did our usual letter of the week.  We did our usual letter of the week as well.  The letter of the week was Qq .  We learned the sign language for a letter, the literacy link sound symbols, the letter sound, and looking at and writing it in both capital letters and lower case letters.  Click here to view the many ways we learn the letter of the week!

Dental Health Week

This week we talked about Dental Health. We started on Monday with a matching of missing teeth to the toothbrush that had the right number on it.  That went onto our walls.  Students really did a great job with this.

Tuesday, our St. Edward kids went on their make up field trip from Catholic schools week, Mrs. Revoir stayed and worked with the students on their letter of the week and reading dental books.

We also made a healthy tooth/unhealthy tooth  by cutting pictures out of magazines and putting them in the right place.  We have these hanging in our hallway. We also made little sets of mouths with mini marshmallows.  Students had to roll a dice, put that many marshmallows on and continue until the mouth was full!  They then had to count all the teeth in the mouth (24).  Students did a great job with this.

We did our usual letter of the week as well.  The letter of the week was Kk .  We learned the sign language for a letter, the literacy link sound symbols, the letter sound, and looking at and writing it in both capital letters and lower case letters.  Click here to view the many ways we learn the letter of the week!
