Earth Day.Recycle

Hello Parents!

What a crazy week!  Monday students had Mrs. Revoir and they watched the move, The Lorax to help teach them the importance of taking care of our earth.  They made a Lorax project in which they made their own truffula trees by working those fine motor skills and bunching up tissue paper and gluing it on top of popsicle stick stems.  they then made a handprint Lorax.  Very cute project!

Tuesday, students began their number of the week books.  For number of the week, they have a number outline and they place the correct number of stickers on that page. They then draw the correct number of a objects indicated on that page.  Students are getting good at the counting and the fine motor skills of copying print and shapes.

Wednesday, we took the day to be a make up the number books for those who missed it.  Students appeared to be very excited that I was back so we worked together in the centers socializing and correctly  using the centers.

Thursday, students had the opportunity to help sort recycling items, graph them, and then answer

questions about the data. Students did VERY well with this concept!  They also did the third page of their number of the week books and cut the numbers out of ads and glued them on the correct number outline.  This takes a lot of time, but is very cool to see them finding what they are learning in real life situations.  Feel free to look through the ads together and look for the numbers and letters as a team.  A little scavenger hunt game to them,  is really a GREAT learning opportunity they don't even know about.

We had school this Friday.  We had a great turn out and we had a lot of fun. We did a write the room with sight words.  Students wrote down a variety of sight words and they then worked on reading them. Students are doing VERY good at breaking apart the letters sounds and pushing them together into words.  They are so excited they are "reading!"

We have a very busy remainder of the school year ahead of us!

• Please send in your Graduation preference form by tomorrow. We will tally the day with the most yeses and that will be our graduation day. We will let you know on Tuesday April 29
• We are working on projects to be sold for Blooming Bonanza fundraiser that starts Friday May 9.  Please come check out all the cool plants, but also the teacher table that will hold our products along with all the other products the students in our school have been making.  
• We have our Safety Fair Field Trip (at Hillside 4k site) on Friday May 2.  Please make sure your trip form is in!  No slip, no Trip!  There is no cost for this trip!
• We have our Planetarium Field Trip on Thursday May 8.  Please make sure you have your trip form in, as well as the $4 fee.  
• PALS Assessments will start May 6.
• Graduation will be in the end of May or beginning of June.  Date to be decided.
• PLEASE BE CHECKING YOUR CHILD'S FOLDER AT NIGHT.  THERE WILL BE MANY END OF THE YEAR WRAP UP FORMS, QUESTIONNAIRES, AND MORE.  PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU RETURN FORMS PROMPTLY.

Following our letter of the week project (one more week left!) we will be starting our number of the week books.  These books will consist of putting the correct amount of stickers on the number, draw that many objects, and cut that number out of the magazines.  We need your help!  Please send magazines or ads (ads seem to have the most numbers).  Sunday ads would be perfect!  Thank you!

• Book Orders came home and are available. They  WERE due April 25 (if you submit them electronically), but no more forms were submitted.  I will have ONE MORE BOOK ORDER.    Our FINAL book order will be due May 16 to ensure that all orders are in by the end of the year.
• BECAUSE IT IS FINALLY GETTING WARM ENOUGH TO GO BACK OUTSIDE, PLEASE BE SURE THEY ARE DRESSED FOR THE WEATHER TO GO OUT.  Please send your child dressed for the weather as we go outside as long as it is not raining or below 0*(students are more than welcome to bring layers daily or to leave in their lockers)  It may also be time to change out the change of clothes to make sure they are weather appropriate.  If you send a new change of clothes, we will send the warm weather clothes in their backpacks.  We go outside on TUESDAYS AND THURSDAYS, Extended day kids go out EVERY DAY.
• Folders. Please be checking your child's daily folder each night.  We put notes on the notebook pages in their folders as well as any notes we may have for you.  Artwork is also sent home this way. As we start letter of the week, we will also start sending home homework to help reinforce the letter concept and identification.  Please work on this with you child to help the students make the connection between home and school. 
• Also, Please check the student's Wednesday Folders.  Please try to take info out and return the folder and any forms/info/payments in those folders a day or two after receiving. 
• Literacy Bags are done for the year!  Thank you for your great work in working with your child on these!
• Library Books come every week.  We go to library on Monday and student have the opportunity to check out a book and keep it for a week. It can be kept in their back packs or at home, but please remember to bring it on Mondays.

Easter, Bunnies, and Eggs

We had a good week.  We started Monday off with an Easter egg hunt. Students had to go around the room and fill their baskets with sight words.  When they were done, they would report back and start to read their words (or state the letters if that is the level they are at).  Students really enjoyed the hunt!

Wednesday students did a variety of projects.  Students made shape bunnies. We worked on listening and following directions as well as the shapes they were told to take out of the buckets.  Students did pretty good with this, though we did learn we need to turn on our kindergarten listening ears!

I have seen a great deal of learning happening in our room lately.
Students are using the centers correctly, role playing, and really taking material we have already taught and expanding on it in the centers.  I began teaching the students addition with drawing bubbles (circles) for the numbers in the equation and then counting how many in all.  I taught them this on our board, but then how they could do it on on their own in the centers.  Students are really enjoying it!  It is amazing what they enjoy if they have dry erase markers. :)  Also, students are working on number to dot matching with Easter eggs in this center.  Great learning happening!

We also really enjoyed our shaving cream day! Some students were writing letters (really working on correctly forming the letters rather than just making them however they want) or sight words and words they can spell phonetically.  They love shaving cream! Thank you to those who donated the shaving cream!

We did our FINAL letter of the week.  We did our usual letter of the week as well.  The letter of the week was Zz.We learned the sign language for a letter, the literacy link sound symbols, the letter sound, and looking at and writing it in both capital letters and lower case letters.  Click here to view the many ways we learn the letter of the week!

The Tuesday project of letter of the week is to decorate a letter with something that starts with the letter. This week we decorated the letter Z with zig-zags.  On Thursday, our letter of the week project was to read a page from our alphabet book, Z is for Zebra.

Outer space Week 2

PLEASE NOTE: Next week, St. Edward School is on spring break.  This means the only ones in session are the 4k students.  I taught when 4k was on break in the kindergarten and afterschool program and Mrs. Revoir, our afternoon teacher, had off.  We are switching for this spring break. Mrs. Revoir will be subbing for me for  Thursday April 17-April 22.  The office will also be closed at this time.  If you have an absence, have a note for the teacher, or any information, please email Mrs. Revoir at trevoir@stedwardk5.org.  Also, there is no extended day or aftercare offered on these days.  All students must be picked up at 10:55am.   

On Monday, students colored by number, but this time I did not tell the students the color words, they had to work out the first sound by themselves or with their friends to work on reading their color words and initial sound.

Students did great.  Students also interviewed their friends on their favorite space picture.  Student's then tallied their friend's answer.  They then collected all of the data into a graph and graphed the answers. They then assessed their results and circled the number that had the most data.

Wednesday, we did another write the room activity in which students went around the room in search for space words. Students are getting better at copying the print they see.  We continue on working on not only making the letters, but forming them correctly.  We also drew ourselves as astronauts. Students drew their face in the astronaut helmet, working on adding details of a face.  We also worked on some number patterns, which was tricky but fun to figure out the passwords!

Outer Space

We started our Space unit this week.  We will be going on a field trip to the Barlow Planetarium in May so we thought it would be fun to have some background knowledge.

Monday we counted the craters on the moon. We learned the vocabulary word crater and worked on counting 1 to 1 as well as number recognition when they colored.

Wednesday, students worked on directional words in a book that little aliens need to be in a specific

direction to those in the book. Students also had to cut and glue their own pieces.  Students then wrote the title of the book on and decorated it.  They are bringing them home!  Have them read them to you!  If your child had trouble with the directional words (apparently this is harder than doing it with a teddy bear on their body as we did at conference and report card time), help them with it.  Talk about the directional word, use that word as often as you can in daily life, or even play searching games where they have to follow verbal directions to find things!
